- Description: After the test, you choose how you want to pay for the users we bring you.
- Author: Wayne Hattingh

Two weeks ago I wrote about why we start everyone on a [small test](https://www.web3-advertising.com/why-we-start-everyone-on-a-small-test/). A fixed $1,000 test campaign to gauge targeting and demand, for both our sakes.

It keeps advertiser risk low while we both find out if this works.

This week is about what comes after, once the test has worked.

At that point, the question is usually **what does it cost from here?**

If the test works and gives us enough signal to scale, you move to cost-per-acquisition (CPA) [pricing](https://docs.specify.sh/advertising/pricing?ref=web3-advertising.com). There are two ways forward from here.

Fixed, or tiered.

**Fixed is the simple one.**

You pay one flat price for every new user we bring you. We agree on that price before the campaign starts. For most projects I see a range of $15-21 a user, depending on your product and how the test went.

With fixed pricing you know exactly what each acquired user costs, and a lot of teams like that.

What some teams don't like is that it charges the same for every user. And users can be all over the place in terms of volume.

On one side of the spectrum, you have the ones who come in, make one small swap, and you never see them again. On the other side, you have those that trade thousands, even hundreds of thousands in their first week.

That's the trade-off with fixed pricing. You pay the same for both.

And some users take a while to show what they're worth.

[You can’t tell a good user from their first trade. The whale and the tourist look the same on their first trade. Only time tells them apart.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/dd/d7/ddd7acdd-b0e2-462c-8132-53172eb6962a/content/images/icon/w3a-83ff0add-6791-4767-9739-b76c62c08f25.png)Web3-AdvertisingMadusha Thilakarathna![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/dd/d7/ddd7acdd-b0e2-462c-8132-53172eb6962a/content/images/thumbnail/judge-it-here---3-2-cec20d8f-333d-452a-a3d7-163d6595b0df.png)](https://www.web3-advertising.com/you-cant-tell-a-good-user-from-their-first-trade/)

**Then there's tiered pricing.**

With tiered, what each user costs you depends on how much trading volume they generate in their first 7 days.

We're using trading volume as a proxy for value here. That doesn't mean someone who trades more is necessarily a better customer over the long term, but it gives us something concrete to measure and price against.

Using the example tiers in our docs, a user who trades less than $50 costs you 50 cents. One who trades between $10k and $50k costs $42\. Someone who does $100k or more costs $200 or more.

With fixed pricing, we earn the same whether someone trades $10 or $100,000\. Of course we still want to bring you good users, because otherwise you won't run another campaign with us.

But it's about more than getting another campaign. Our reputation matters to us, and [we're not going to put that at risk for a quick fee](https://www.web3-advertising.com/why-we-start-everyone-on-a-small-test/).

[Why we start everyone on a small testProof we can deliver, before you commit any real budget.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/dd/d7/ddd7acdd-b0e2-462c-8132-53172eb6962a/content/images/icon/w3a-98535048-ad9d-40ee-9e8d-4007df766547.png)Web3-AdvertisingWayne Hattingh![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/dd/d7/ddd7acdd-b0e2-462c-8132-53172eb6962a/content/images/thumbnail/Start-small-2-0e77ef40-c212-4c54-af25-5514aeac70bd.png)](https://www.web3-advertising.com/why-we-start-everyone-on-a-small-test/)

And with tiered pricing, there's an immediate financial incentive to deliver trading volume. If the users we bring you barely trade, then we barely earn.

**That keeps us honest.**

Last week I mentioned the users who trade a little over a long time, and it becomes a lot.

Those ones work in your favour. We price them on their first 7 days, so if they start slow, they cost you very little. If they turn into big users three months later, that's all yours.

**We take that pricing risk.**

Tiered only works if volume is what a valuable user looks like for your product.

If you're running a points programme, you'll probably get farmers who trade big in the first week to rack up points, and then disappear. On tiered, you could end up paying the highest rates for them. Fixed might make more sense there.

Either way, the numbers above are a starting point. Where your price lands depends on your product and your users, and we set it together after the test, based on what the test actually showed.

**The same goes for your budget.**

You decide what you're comfortable spending, and we'll recommend an amount based on what we learned from the test. If you've set a hard limit, we'll work within it.

**You're not signing up for an open-ended commitment.**

We bill at the end of each month, in fiat or crypto. On tiered, we wait the 7 days to see what each user does before we bill for them, even if their 7-day window crosses month-end.

So it goes in that order. Test first. Then choose the pricing model that fits what the test showed.

Fixed gives you one number. Tiered gives you a price for each user, based on what they actually do.
