TGE (Token Generation Event)
The launch event when a project's tokens become available, historically driving much of web3 marketing strategy
Often accompanied by airdrops to early users or community members. The web3 equivalent of an IPO, but with fewer regulatory constraints.
Historical Impact
TGEs drove much of web3 marketing over the past decade. The prospect of token launches fueled ICO mania, airdrop farming, quest completion, and mercenary user behavior. Marketing optimized for creating hype around a launch event rather than building sustainable businesses.
The Problem
TGE-focused marketing attracted users interested in tokens, not products. After the airdrop, most users disappeared. Retention was terrible, lifetime value was low, and CAC calculations were meaningless because "customers" were actually reward hunters.
Market Evolution
The industry is maturing. More projects realize they can build real companies with revenue from real users who actually value the product, not just the token. TGEs and airdrops are becoming less common as projects recognize the poor retention and sustainability of token-launch strategies.
Performance Marketing Opportunity
This shift creates space for performance marketing. When building for sustainable growth rather than a one-time launch, the distinction between brand awareness and conversion optimization matters. Positive ROI campaigns become possible and essential, unlike hype-driven TGE marketing that optimized for short-term attention over long-term value.
